The Adobe Creative Suite is a good place to start. You can use Adobe After Effects to add elements to your video through compositing. Adobe Audition is good for building the soundtrack.

That depends on what type of computer you have. If you are on a PC then it should come with a program called Windows Movie Maker. This is a very basic and easy to use program that lets you do all sorts of thing to your footage. You can put filters onto the video, slow it down, speed it up, and add transitions in between clips. The only problem I have encountered is it freezes up sometimes so if you are using it save often.

If you are on a Mac there is a program called iMovie which is basically the same thing as WMM. Those programs are both great tools for amature film makers and are easy to use. If you want more advanced postproduction software I would reccomend Final Cut Pro. It is wonderful, but also very expensive.
