They pick things up from TV, from their parents, from their other family members, from being out in the world.
The things they tend to pick up, of course, are the things they've seen people respond to with surprise or shock - something that got a big reaction.
That's why kids always say the very things we dread they will - and often at the worst possible moment!

Kids pick up things from everywhere. They are like little sponges... They will repeat things they hear at home from mom and dad, or siblings...
Alot of kids will repeat what they hear on TV... Have youlistened to some of these so called children's programs??? Ughhh...
My daughter picks up some of the worst things at school... She has come home several times asking what various curse words mean... I have also heard her say hurtful things to others...
As parents I think we need to pay close attention to the things we say, and to what they are exposed to!

no not necessarily. it's in most cartoons and most every other tv show. they also hear it from other kids. when my son was about 9 he used a form of the "n" word on the bus. the school looked at me as if a were a monster for teaching my son things like that. he NEVER heard it from me or my husband. it is not allowed in our home. i even correct my dad when he inadvertently uses it.(he's from another generation) turned out my son heard it from a girl down the street who's family was racist. they hear things from all over. they'll use the wrong words only if we don't teach them not to. when the word comes up just correct them.

The 3-year-old could have heard it from another 3-year-old, or from the television, or yes, from the parents. Thing is, there are so many places you really can't nail it down.
Still, the child is THREE. A 3-year-old does not understand the concept.

BECAUSE A 3-YEAR-OLD HAS VERY IMMATURE EMOTIONAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND MENTAL DEVELOPMENT, THESE ARE CONCEPTS WHICH ARE FOREIGN TO HIM AND ONES HE HIMSELF WOULD NOT CREATE. OLDER KIDS HEAR THINGS FROM OTHERS, AND MANY TIMES INTERNALIZE THE CONCEPTS.

no, kids get their idea of "fat" "ugly" etc. from the media as well as other children. we should try to tell them that these are not nice things to say and they are hurtful to others.
