Some one who suddenly starts walking on his toes may have suffered a spinal cord injury, or if gradual, a spinal cord tumor . A thorough examination to include the spine is needed. I would make a call to his doctor, better to be safe then sorry.

I wouldn't assume that the problem is neurological at your sons age. Most neurological causes of toe walking surface when the child is of pre-school age. When there isn't a neurological problem, the reason for toe walking is often unknown, but sometimes people tend to walk on their toes because it is comfortable. Toe walking might be more comfortable than normal walking for a variety of physical reasons - imbalanced tightness in antagonistic muscle groups; tightness in the Achilles tendon; differences in the length of the legs; fallen arches; or to take weight off of bunions or other type of pressure point. If the toe walking is a problem, it might be worthwhile to set up a visit with a podiatrist.
