Historically recognized as the 27th letter of the alphabet, it is called an "ampersand". It has been found on Roman sources dating to the 1st century AD. The "at" sign, @, is originally an accounting symbol, long before the rise of the internet and e-mail addresses.

i thought ampersand was the @ symbol.
