Help! My kitchen needs a makeover! Here's what has to stay - the floor has a marbled look to it - it is mostly white but has blueish gray in it, the cabinets are a beautiful dark wood to match the rest of the trim in our home, and the countertop is pale blue.
The kitchen is quite small, and sort of dark because of all of the dark wood cabinets, but I am not willing to paint the cabinets. I consider myself to be good at interior design, but I am just stumped because of the high contrast between the pale blue countertop and the dark cabinets. I love the floor, but hate the countertop. I know you can buy paint to paint the counter, but I am too scared to do that. I would consider having someone put new laminate on the countertop, but I have no idea how much this would cost or who (a store?) you would go to to ask about this.
Another problem I have is that there is a LOT of trim in our kitchen. This means I have to decide on two colors instead of one.

Currently the kitchen is the same as it was when we moved in last year - I've done the rest of the house but am stumped on the kitchen. Right now the walls are sort of a pale greenish blue and the trim is sort of a light evergreen, and there is flowerish border around to tie all the blues/greens/beiges together. It certainly doesn't look bad, but its just kind of "blah" and doesn't do anything for me. It doesn't reflect my style or the fact that I'm 24 and really into interior design.

I'm also scared to pair the blue with yellow because of it looking too country-ish. Please help!

One more thing - my living room is off the kitchen, but through a doorway, and it is done in monochromatic shades of the aquaish color that's so hot right now - if anyone is familiar with Pier 1, its the color that they have a lot of pieces and curtains in. If I stick with blue or green in the kitchen, won't this clash with the aqua in the livingroom?

Many are suggesting painting an accent wall another color - my kitchen is sort of circular with cabinets all around - there is no ceiling to floor wall in the whole kitchen without cabinets or the bar against it.

you can buy sheets of laminate at Lowes - about 45$ a sheet, so I bet they have a list of contractors who could help with the installation. go there and check that out and while youre there scope out some of their kitchen set ups with dark cabinets, might give you some color scheme ideas, then you can head on over to the paint section. lots of paint chips are now in color cordinated sets with 2 or 3 colors on 1 chip, so you'll know what looks good with what. have fun!

Ok, I think I have a mental picture. If you can't afford to change the counter tops, you have to work around them. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot, if you measure your counter tops they can give you a pretty good estimate of costs. I would price them first before I did anything else. You said the floors have a blueish gray and that's the color I would put on the walls. Almost a cream, but with a hint of that blueish gray, it should not clash with the color in the living area, but bring home paint chips to make sure. To tie the blue counter tops with the cabinets I would look for hardware that had blue to match the counter tops, or a brushed silver finish. Good Luck.

You can go to the home depot or lowes for cheap countertops anywhere from 2-500.00 depends on what ya get.

I think a pale yellow on walls and a darker yellow trim would stand out against the dark cabinets..

Pale green (sage) with a white or cream trim.. Or you can always paint it all cream or white and pick a bold color for one wall and use colored accents (vase, plates etc)

Definetely do not match the countertop to the wall, that would be just wrong. (pale blue) eeeewwww, hates! Re-do the countertop in a "normal" color. Paint your walls off white or cream and then do one accent wall in a deep red wine burgandy color. That is absolutely gorgeous in homes and it would compliment your dark cabinets as well!! Have fun!!

It sounds like weird colors together, but a dark ocean blue and an avacado green look AWESOME together.
