I think you are referring to type I diabetes mellitus, which was formerly called juvenile diabetes. However, it is a lifelong condition, so it affects people into their adulthood. It is caused by an autoimmune distruction of Beta cells in the Islet of Langherhans in the pancrease where insulin is synthesized.
