It is all in the way they are raised and taught. I have 2 of them, a male and a female. They are both very loving big babies. Now my male is very protective of me but as long as he doesn't feel you are a threat to me then he is fine with you.

When someone gets a rottweiler as a puppy. They have two choices and how they want that dog to be.When rottweilers are aggressive, the owners did something to make it that way. They either looked for aggressiveness and encouraged it.Or worse they beat the dog,tie the dog up outside, and barely give it attention. When rottweilers are friendly, they have been raised in a good environment. The owners discouraged aggressiveness, towards certain things.Rottweilers were bred in Germany to first protect flocks of sheep.Later on,Rottweilers were bred to protect children. When Rottweilers are raised around a family and raised to be friendly,is when you find the best friend anyone could ask for. When Rottweilers are not raised around family and raised to be aggressive they are used to protect property or whatever the owner finds to use it for.Raising a dog to be aggressive is cruel and it should not be allowed.Because as long as you have that dogs loyalty, that dog will protect you at all costs.

Rottweiler's can be nice, I had one for a long time and he was a big baby even great with my kids. My Ex and his GF have one and he is also a big baby I love him he is just a great dog.
Any animal can become mean if treated mean, if a Rottie or any dog is loved and has time spent with them they will love back.
I am sure some animals have been treated great and have been mean it happens not sure why.
A Rottie is a great dog, protective and loving. If they are raised around kids as a puppy they will learn they are part of the family like any other animal does.
But with any animal you should not let kids torture them like pull their ears or hit them that can make them mad but really a Rottie is a dog and seeing the ones I have seen and the one I owned they are nice dogs.
Some dogs get a bum rap becasue we hear bad stories about certian breeds, I owned a pit bull and never had any problems with him he was also great and way toooo friendly even with strangers.. LOL.. So yes a rottie can be nice.

As an obedience trainer myself, I can tell you that the vast majority of dogs are nice, when trained properly. That means starting as soon as they have had their final vaccinations, and enrolling them in obedience classes.
This is particularly important for larger breeds that have a guarding or working instinct/history. They must learn early that you are "alpha" and they are not. Any puppy that is allowed to run your home and the people in it, will become an annoying nuisance, no matter how much it is loved.
Even older dogs can benefit from training, but it may take longer to see the results. I recommend a book and video by Brian Kilcommons called "Good Owners, Great Dogs". You can work from this at home until you can locate a class near you, perhaps through a vet or kennel club.
Kilcommons' techniques are natural and not confrontational, which ensures a higher rate of success than trying to force your will, on a willful dog.

By not having morons as it's owners! I've met many sweet rottweilers. It's all in how the dog is treated and trained.

If you socialize him as a puppy, by exposing him to many people that play w him (throwing out parties that are fun for the pup!)
Training classes if you don't have the time to do it yourself.
Puppy that comes from a good breeder, one that you have researched the background and met the parents.
And just bc is just a dog that will love you and be faithful to you and your family.
My experience, the so called "mean breeds" tend to be the nicest, easier animals to work with: pits, dobies, rotts, etc.

Treat him well and train him well. Always train him with rewards, never punishment. If you must scold him do it with your voice alone and use a separate name e.g. "bad boy" not his real name, so he will not get a negative association with you calling his name. The training will teach him that you are top dog and he does not control you, and that it can be fun to be with you.
Also, keep him occupied. Don't let him get bored, or he might get destructive / aggressive etc. You can train him to play hide and seek games such as "hunt the treat" or "hunt the person" as well as obvious fetching games. The saying "a tired dog is a happy dog" has truth in it too!
Basically if you treat your dog well, walk them so they don't have too much energy, get to understand them and spend time with them rather than expecting them to occupy themselves, you should have a rewarding relationship with your dog - and a dog which is happy to defer to you!

I don't personally know any Rottweilers but I know people who do and they say Rotties are much maligned. Apparently those that are well brought up are good gentle family pets.

My husband swears by them. We haven't had any, but he says every one he's ever known was a big baby. It's all in how they're trained. Let me guess--the ones you've met are owned by people who wanted them as guard dogs? If they're treated as family pets, instead, most breeds of dogs will behave accordingly. Some of the sweetest dogs I've ever had were German Shepherds.
