One of my best friends went to a sleep study to get diagnosed with sleep apnea .and the doctor told him we woke up over 300 times during the night ..and he never reached REM sleep .and that he stopped breathing over 50 times..and he was diagnosed with mild to severe apnea..so if his case is not 100% severe i can imagine the number of times he woke up is only half as many times as people who have it bad..

those with severe sleep apnea never actually get into a deep sleep, the kind we all need for our health. The apnea actually keeps some part of the brain awake, tho the person may not be conscious of it, to keep the body breathing, or to start the body breathing again when it has stopped. When I had my sleep study done, it was revealed that I literally stopped breathing 50 to 60 times per minute!! Now I use a cpap, and I sleep really well and awake fully rested.

People with sleep apnea may wake up hundreds of times a night – and not remember any of it. It really depends on the person. Because of this, other symptoms of this disorder are important: drowsiness, falling asleep when you shouldn't, and snoring, for example. Demographically, overweight males are more at risk. This sleep disorder can cause lots of cognitive problems, so it should be taken care of. By the way, there are two kinds of sleep apnea – one deas with the brian, the other with tissue. In practice, both are often involved. So, that's more than you asked for... But it really depends on the person, but it can be in the hundreds.

Well I consider I suffer from it although never had it diagnosed by a doctor I wake up most nights ever 1 to 2 hours and sometimes find myself falling asleep during the day to compensate for it .I have been prescibed sleeping tablets on occassions this does help while I am on them but as soon as they are gone I am awake continually again.Sometimes exercise helps a bit but it doesn't seem to cure it .What the cause is I don't know and how to stop it I also don't know.I have had this many years now and am used to it it doesn't seem to have any detremental effects on my life so far as others suggest .hope this helps you in some way John H.
