Rub butter on the tar and then wash off. This works for large dogs as well.

There are a couple strong dog shampoos that will remove tar, but you'd have to order them online. Short of that, you'll probably just have to either cut it off or try something like dishwashing liquid. If it's not a lot, get a soft pin slicker brush and try brushing over the spot, the pins might be able to break up the tar and pull it out. Good luck!

The question is how you get tar ON a small dog. Just kidding. I would call the vet or a grooming place for that information. You don't want to use anything that will cause skin irritation.

WD40 and don't spray it near the face. After the tar has loosened up, it will take several washes with soap and water to completely remove it. After that, you might want to add a conditioner, so the skin won't be completely dried out.

DO NOT USE GASOLINE OR KEROSENE!

I went through this many times with our own dogs when we operated a roofing company! They would pick up tar from the equipment in the yard. Don't use perfumed products, many dogs are allergic to them. And if the dog isn't, I am!

I have to answer this question to help your dog and i am not posative right now. My husband use to tar for a living and he used skin so soft to remove it. skin so soft works best on everything including paint and it is safe for your dog as I have used it on mine. Is it in the hair where you can cut it out? There are a lot of chemicals in tar and you need to get it out. Baby oil will not work like skin so soft. If you can not get skin so soft that fast what do we do?crap I hate it when i can't come up with another answer. please get some skin so soft from avon and keep it on hand it will last forever. in the mean time try baby oil or if someone else can come up with something, but do not use a paint thinner. or nailpoish remover. or an harmful chemical like that.

I used to be a groomer. I used goop off. I left it on for about 5 minutes and then with a flea comb, it slid off the tar in a gentle manner without hurting the dog.

You'll have to use a petroleum product! Sorry, but if you do it right there will be no health effects, Break down the tar with gasoline and bathe the poor thing thoroughly at least three times. Use baby shampoo the last time you bathe him/her. The dog will lick and lick it's coat, and there will eventually be some ill effects. Good luck, and I'm sorry for your pet and you!

Surprised no one suggested WD-40. Liberally soak the dog in it, work it in, then rinse off what you can. Reapply. Then go for the skin-so-soft. After all is said and done, let the poor dog rest a day, then give it a conditioning rinse.
