Sevin dust is not good for dogs. The best way to keep the fleas (and ticks) away is to use Frontline Plus. It is a topical medication that is absorbed by the skin of the dog. It is then emitted by the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin. It kills the fleas for a whole month. You can purchase it online or through your veterinarian's office. Some pet supply stores carry it as well.
Edited to add:
If you use Revolution, which is also a good product, please note that it is also a heartworm preventative. You should not give your dog any other heartworm meds while using the Revolution.

There are many things on the market for fleas. I have learned the hard way. I have tried many, many products! It all boiled down to purchasing Frontline or something compatible from the vet. Start now before the infestation gets worse! Preventative measures goes a long way. Some people think the flea season doesn't start yet. I beg to differ. Fleas live on animals all year, they stay tucked away under the animals coat and continue to multiply. Grant you some months are a lot worse. There are some things used for the yard, be very careful!!! Dogs have different reactions to chemicals. Some can not be affected while others could become extremely ill.

Home Depot or Lowes sells a product that you hook to the end of a gargen hose and spray the yard. This kills all the insects including fleas. We use it every Summer before the fleas start to become a problem and our Yorkie thaks us. By removing the fleas from the yard, they don't enter the house unless your dog comes in contact with another, infected animal. Also, use products from Petmed.com. Good prices and great products.

My dog had fleas as well. Unfortunately, all of our dogs get it at least once in their lifetime.
When having fleas, i tried everything. Yes, the flea collar works but it is not as effective. You should try flea shampoo and wash your dog thoroughly. You'll see so many fleas out, then after, use a flea repel like k9 advantix or frontline. Use this every month and wash your dog with the flea shampoo every 3 months or so.
After, you'll dog will be nice and tick-flea!

Well, what I do for my dogs, and cats as well, is I put Frontline on them once a month. Frontline keeps away fleas, tics and all the other bugs that are harmful towards them. Even though one of my dogs doesnt like to be outside, I still put frontline on him because the other dogs can carry in the tics and pass on fleas.

Do NOT bathe your dog every other day. It is harsh to their skin and strips it of it's natural oils.
One over the counter method of flea prevention is Avon Skin So Soft oil mixed 1 part to 3 parts water in a spray bottle. Just mist onto your pets coat and voila! They have no fleas, they smell good and the oil gives a shine to their coat. This is also used as a fly repellent on horses.

Frontline plus worked miracles for our cat and I'm sure for dogs too, as pointed out by other posters here. You can ask a vet, or buy them cheaper on ebay from a very reputable seller from austrailia. A borax/salt mixture sprinkled on the carpet, left for a couple days, then deep clean vaccumed will eliminate them entirely (kills eggs and larvae) and give your dog much needed relief at home =D
