I am doing a fieldwork study in my anthropology class at Ball State University on people's opinions and views on cochlear implants. If you would like to voice your opinion or thoughts that would be greatly aprreciated.

With the alternative being permanent neural deafness, yeah, I'd say the cochlear implant is a good thing

I lost my hearing 6 years ago. Personally I am against them. I thought the movie "through deaf eyes" on PBS was very interesting last night. I think you could catch it again on Sunday-look it up! You will learn a lot. The downside to the movie was they didn't hit on the downsides of the implants or discuss why the implants are not embraced by all who have hearing loss.
My biggest problem with them is that they have to sever the ear nerve entirely to implant them. I lost my hearing because of acoustic tumors on my ear nerves. What if they find a way to heal these nerves in the future and they have already been severed??? Cochlear Implants won't seem so great then.

I think they are a HUGE breakthrough in treating hearing loss. Previously, the only thing that came close was a bone-conduction oscillator, which necessitated the use of masking noise in the other ear.
Go to the Galludet University website; they may have opinions from members of the deaf community ( I know they are very divided on the implants). Another idea is ASHA.org, which is the site of the American Speech Language Hearing Association.

I think Cochlear Implants are great. I know 2 people who have had the implants and they say it helps them extremely. So I am pro Cochlear Implants.
