Well, the Supermoist was buy 1 get 1, and I didn't look at the directions.
I'm used to the cakes that take 1/2 C of oil. Can I use the oil in this mix, and have it come out more like the normal ones?

I have tried substituting 1/2 C of oil instead of butter and it worked just fine.
For a healthier recipe, I've read that some people use apple sauce instead of oil. I will have to try it one of these days.

There are some "fat substitutes" sold in grocery stores. These are mostly fruit purees, often a combination of mild flavored fruits. I've substituted half the butter with applesauce in toll house cookies with okay results. They tasted a bit apple-y but not as bad as you might think. They were also a bit "cake-y" in texture, which may be just what you are looking for.

Pear puree might be milder.

The idea is that you are substituting something moist for the oil. You probably shouldn't substitute 100% of the oil, but DO experiment with ratios. Oil provides a nice mouth-feel and total subsitution would probably detract from the cake too much.

I just looked at a generic box of cake mix and it says to use 1/3 cup of oil (sold by Loblaws inc.) and then I compared Dr. Oetker (brand) cake mix and it says 2/3 of a cup of oil. This leads me to believe that the amount of oil can be changed. I would simply use more water and less oil. As far as the butter goes-the flavour will be nicer if you bake with butter (unsalted) but the only way to know for sure is to adjust it and give it a try-at least you'll know for next time :-)

Replace 1/2 of the oil or butter with applesauce, mashed banana, pureed prunes, or other fruit puree.

For example, if it calls for 1/2 a cup of oil, use 1/4 cup oil and 1/4 cup applesauce.

I believe 1 stick of butter is 1/4 cup?

I'm sure you can substitute or use the same wet ingredients in this mix as another similar mix. If they are both chocolate mix for instance and the same brand the dry mix is no doubt quite similar if not the same.

But, why would you want to replace butter with oil? They are both fat, and oil doesn't have any stronger health role.

You can and you can even use apple sauce. On other cakes it says you can but not on the Supermoist...but you can! It takes the same and has a lot less fat.

Yes. I never use as much oil as they call for. You can also try mashing up a banana and adding it in place of the oil I've also done that too and it gives it a nice flavor and its a lot healthier.

sure...hint: try substituting plain yogurt for the oil, it's even better!
