the best wat to go would probably be a prepaid phone. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Alltel have pretty good prepaid plans.

Yes they will check your credit, but the deposit will not be that much. Ive had a credit card for one year so I have simple history but I qualified for up to like 4 lines with no deposit, my girlfriend on the other hand, had no credit had to pay $75 and could only get 1 line. So yes there is a difference. Also the company may make a difference.

Yes, unfortunately in today's world almost everything revolves around credit.

I had to have my mother "co-sign" in order to avoid the deposit when I was 16 - I've since been able to transfer the account into my name, but they still ran a credit check to see if I needed a deposit.

Yes. Cell phones will go on your credit score, and therefore in order to get one they will check your credit. You can get a prepaid phone, or get on a plan with somone else with stronger credit. Keep in mind, every time your phone bill is late it will effect your credit score. This is out of the ordinary, because generally utility bills or similar things do not have such impact, but cell phones are the exception.
