My 5yr old nephew has red, painful and swollen gums - all over, top AND bottom and can hardly eat. The dentist takes him in Thursday (just couldn't earlier), untill then - anybody has an idea what could it be or how to relive him?

well it could be gingervitis..it could be an infection, or it could just be teeth comming in...either baby teeth getting ready to fall out, and the adult tooth pushing through..or just the adult teeth comming into place...my son gets the same thing some times, and i took him to the dentist, his was mouth sores that was causing it.

Gingivitis.

I'd say it's gingivitis, a gum disease along his gumline.
Make sure he's brushing his teeth morning and night and after each meal. You can buy mouthwash to help kill the disease.
I bet that's it.
Good luck with this.
