A parrot is a specific type of bird with a hooked bill (upper and lower maxilla and mandible are movable) and zygodactyl feet (2 toes forward, 2 toes back). A parakeet is a sub-type of parrot. A parakeet is, in general, a light-bodied parrot with a long tail and long primary wing feathers. This definition does not include Macaws, which are heavy-bodied birds with long tail and long primaries.

Conures, budgies, Quakers, and Rosellas are all parakeets and also are parrots. They have light bodies, long tails, and long primaries. Senegals, Meyers, Pionus, and Amazons are all parrots and not parakeets. They are heavy-bodied birds with short, stumpy tail and wings.

Parakeets are essentially small parrots though not the smallest. That goes to the pygmy parrot. Both are hook bills in which they can hull seeds and do not need grit to grind up the seeds like pigeons do. They live for a shorter period of time than other parrots 8-10 years as opposed to 30-80 years depending on the species. Different parrots have different speaking abilities. Parakeets do not rate high compared to other parrots. All parrots including parakeets are more intelligent than once believed. I've found that I got the pet I deserved. When I spent the time and energy with a bird; the bird would be a great companion. A neglected bird is sad, aggressive and or fearful. Have a tweet year.

Parakeets are small parrots so a lot. They both have hook bills, and have the same diet, the parakeet obviously needing smaller bites of it. They both have the ability to talk or mimic words, the bigger the bird the greater the ability.
