First, if he's lived to 90, congratulations to him.

I would suggest going out, maybe to your local library and collecting scraps of news and odd bits of information from the year and date he was born, start a scrapbook, and just continue it for every year he has lived. Just follow with the important stuff, like when Pearl Harbor was bombed, the JFK assassination, when the first man walked on the moon, etc....
I'm sure he would be pleased and proud that one of his kids would bother to take the time to go through all the time to do this for him. And don't forget to include important family events as well. You could get your family to help, have them provide pictures, funny little stories, etc.

That would be a very heart-warming present for anyone who has lived that long.

you buy him an original comissioned portrait of his kids or grandkids or someone that means something to him...even his dog.

Try a gift certificate to a spa for a nice massage, pedicure, & manicure. Or maybe some nice slippers & throw for his lap.
