There is a married couple that we've been friends with for almost 10 years. They wanted to relocate from where they used to live to where we live, and asked us if we would take them in for a little while until they can get jobs and an apartment. I spoke with my husband and he gave it the OK. When they finally arrived they came with 2 HUGE dogs! (I have 2 little dogs in my house). I told them that those dogs had to stay outside. The first night the dogs were rowdy and since it was cold outside I allowed them to bring them into their room under the condition that during the day the dogs will remain outdoors. Well, now I have a "carpet" of dog hair all over my house!! While my hubby and I are working they keep the dogs inside despite of what I told them!! They have been looking for work but so far nothing. I've told them repeatedly to tie the dogs outside but they are oblivoius to my demands. I would hate to evict them from my house...and I don't want to kill their dogs. What should I do?

I want to thank you all for your great advise! Well, after almost 2 weeks they still haven't found a job and their money ran out (or so they say) to the point that I even had to give them gas money so he can go to his job interviews (whatever it takes to get them back on their feet and out of my house), with that said I doubt that they can board their dogs so I guess I'm stuck. I've tried to be nice about this situation but I'm getting to my wits end. When I said that now I have a carpet I meant that before this, I didn't...I have hardwood floors and the dog hair is all over. Not to mention I have a newborn granddaughter that is staying in my house along with my daughter for the time being, my husband suffers from asthma and I consider it messed up that after working all day long I have to come home to cook for everyone and clean dog hair that does not belong to me for the sake of my own family. They don't even pick up after themselves, let alone the dogs! So as you'll see, I'm SOL!!

Kick them out...simple as that. They can't abide by your rules so kick them out.

lol I'm sorry, I've already learned that lesson. lmao Really, I'm so sorry for laughing. This must be the first time you have done this, because if you had asked "anyone" who has, they would have told you not to do it. (And if you had done it before you would have never agreed to do it again.)
At this point it is damage control. You have to set a deadline and boundaries. Make them clean up their own dog hair. That's just rude. But remember that many good solid friendships end this way.
Choose whether you want to remain friends or have a clean house for the next 6 months. lol Sorry, I'm so glad it's you and not me. But I think I'm older than you. I know better now.
I guess the lesson you will take from this is people will do whatever you let them do. And good people will take advantage of you if you let them. Sit down and write out "house rules". If they do not follow them then it is time to evict.

Well, killing the dogs would be a stupid idea, since it would be animal abuse/cruelty and you would go to jail for, not only the cruelty, but killing someone ELSE'S dog. Lol. But, anyway, it takes a little while to find a job, I should know, I'm still looking for one. It's not really that big of a deal, all you have to do is vacuum it up once every week or two. Really, just get a broom and sweep it up. Those people won't be there for long, so all you have to do is have them help out with the sweeping, or just make them do it. Like, say, "The dogs can stay inside, as long as you sweep up all of the fur out of the floor every week. If you don't, I'm putting them outside. If you bring them inside when I've said no, you're leaving." I don't have a house of my own yet, but that's what I would do. My boyfriend and I have...5 dogs in all. One white, one brown, one pitch black, one tan and white, and the other multicolored. The last two stay outside because the last one (Max) protects the yard and the tan one (my Judas) is impossible to potty train. The other three, though: Wednesday (pitch black Chow mix Chocolate Lab) travels back and forth with me. Brown-Eye (white Red Nose Pit mix American Bulldog) stays at Thad's (boyfriend) house with Charm (brown German Shepherd mix Vanilla Lab). Brown-Eye's fur is the only one that's a problem...It comes home with me and wherever I go. I just keep a lint roller and my broom handy. I hope this helps!

First of all that is very nice that you took these friends in, but they have to respect your rules. Dont be afraid to say something. You just say it in a calm adult manner and tell them they have no choice in the matter. Also stress that since their dogs made the mess with all the hair that they MUST clean up after their own pets. It is only out of respect for your friendship that they abide by your wishes. You were gracious enough to give them a roof over their heads. Also I would give them a time limit on finding a job and make sure they were looking everyday, not just when they felt like it.

I think you should tell them to keep the dogs outside or they have to go (off your property). I hate when people are so inconsiderate, i mean you guys are being generous by letting them stay at your house. Just tell them straight out " hey look I'm not stupid i know you guys keep the dogs in when we're not home, please respect my rules or else you guys have to look elsewhere" I mean i hate confrontations but sometimes you just have to let them know. They need to understand that this is your house and don't wait till things get worst because it will get ugly. Or maybe you can lie to them and tell them that another member of your family has asked to move in with you and you need that room that they're staying in. It's always best to be honest so maybe u should tell them the truth.

You always find out who your true friends are when faced with a crisis. "Look here's the deal we opened are arms to you and your two dogs, now we need a little in return; please clean up after your dogs and abide by our rules otherwise we will have to ask you to leave. Being your friends for 10 years and having to ask you to leave is not and option we want to take, but will if we don't get any cooperation from you." Good luck!

Tell them they have to board the dogs until they find a house. That will get the dogs out of the house, and probably hurry things up in the job hunt. No one wants to leave their puppies in a cage for months at a time.

Tell them to either put their dogs in a dog-care place or that them and their dogs will have to find another place. Don't worry about them being mad at you...you have alread done so much for them. Plus if they are your friends they will understand. I'm sure they are very grateful that you let them stay with you. Maybe help them look somewhere to keep the dogs for now.

Get rid of these "friends." They're mooches, and obviously they don't respect you or your house rules. They won't even clean up after themselves or their animals. They need to 1. take any job that's available, even temporarily, 2. get out of your house, and 3. find someplace else, whether it's a cheap apartment, public housing, or a person who doesn't mind them mooching.

they should keep the dog's outside or keep the dogs in any boarding facility like kennel or animal hospital.. but if the only prob is the carpet that's easy use a professional carpet cleaning after they leave but don't evict them or kill their dogs
