When 50 percent of the population is involved with Agriculture and is only producing 10 percent of the GNP. There is a disproportionate part of the income stream being earned by a small portion of the population. The problem is then compounded by prejudice, lack of education, graft and corruption. The government ONLY guarantees education up to the 6th grade. So, you have a uneducated population working the farms. Those who get an advanced education have to pay for and go out of the country for more quality. The Thai system of education is based on read and repeat. The idea of independent thought is not embraced. Therefore they have a brain drain since they all act the same, do what's best for the group, don't make waves, go the path of least resistance, etc. The buddhist way of life actually impinges on them getting ahead. Because no star is acknowledged in the business world because they made the others look bad.

It is very sad.

I don't think Thailand ranks as a poor country. Its not a G7 country either - I guess its somewhere in the middle. If you want to see poverty, go over the border from Thailand and have a look at Cambodia. Its a different world.

there are two classes of people in Thailand. the rich in Bangkok who are snobs and think that Bangkok is Thailand, then you have the rest of the country who work hard and pay high fees for loans and corruption to the Bangkok rich. The real people of Thailand even poor have a rich life which those in Bangkok will never understand.

I live upcountry, near a small city and nearly everyone seems to have a relatively new motorbike for transport, clean clothes and appear well fed and happy - - the inside of their homes might not appear wealthy or cluttered w/useless plastic items as in the Western world. They live together in family units. I don't know, I just don't see it as being that poor - esp in comparison to neighboring countries... not to mention values, but they also seem far far happier than the hard working, way way stressed out people in the middle class or expanding lower middle class that I see in the USA - hope this helps

Thailand isn't poor, its one of Asia top country and one of the most important economy in Asia. Its a developing country and if you compare to countries surrounding it, it is the most modern and most developed in South East. You can compare Thailand to countries like Japan and South Korea.

not sure that I agree that it is poor, its a boom economy along with India and Japan, China. Yes it has an urban elite and an agricultural base. It relies then on tourism to boost the efforts of friendly but not always sophisticated population, but the people are good and hard working. They look for merit and to give respect, it is important to think of others and care about family, an idea that "rich countries" seem largely to have forgotten.

if you think poor in the monentary sense then it is a poorer country but rich in the people and quality of life and the people are real nice not just for the white man but for everyone in general.
