I would agree the NIV is good, as far as going back to the original translations maybe once you have studied a little more, don't get bogged down in the original language which isn't the King James version by the way, the original bible wasn't any kind of english shakespeare or otherwise, just take it slow, start in one of the four gospels in the new testament Matthew Mark Luke or John take it slow try to understand it and if you have questions write them down and ask someone. Getting a good understanding of Jesus life is the best place to start and that is found in the gospels.

Part of understanding the bible is spiritual understanding. That's a gift from God. I know you are busy, but find a good, teaching church. Many larger churches offer bible study during different times of the week. And they have cell group meetings (even over the phone) that can be helpful too. Find a way to spend some time with God in fellowship with a pastor and congregation. That will help your learning.
As for an actual bible, get the New King James version in a study bible format. Amazon has plenty of choices from various publishers. If you do that and get into a good teaching church that breaks down the bible, a new world of understanding will be opened up to you!
God bless and thank you for being an inspiration to me. I need to make more time for my scripture study!

Hey liz- there are several bibles out there that are much easier reading then the one you have. What it sounds like you have right now is the King James Version, which has lovely language but is very difficult to understand. The Revised Standard Edition is available in most bookstores and is in modern English. Another easy one to read is the Living Bible. You can also find that one under the title "The Way." A word of caution, though - its easy reading but is a paraphrase, so its not entirely accurate to the original languages. ("The Way" is also out of print, but you can usually find them at used bookstores.) And the one I use is The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures. Its from Jehovah's Witnesses, its free, and its also in modern English and can be delivered to your door. :)

You can find many different types of Bibles at any Christian Bookstore. It is good to have a life application bible because it breaks down a lot of things for us to understand and apply it to everyday living. Then there are the NIV, NKJV, Amplified version. Most of these are easier to read, but keep the KJV and begin to compare it with the others. But most importantly ask God to reveal His Word and give you wisdom, understanding and knowledge.

There's the King James Version which is in Old English (the Shakespeare type you referred to and then the easiest to read and is still authentic would be the New International Version (NIV).
Start with one of the four Gospels or the book of Romans!

Sounds like you have the King James version. I really steer clear of that translation, because it seems so removed from everyday life. Try the new revised standard version. Its language is a lot more modern. While on the topic, one church option is to find one that has something going on mid-week, like a Wednesday evening program. My wife and I had to try a bunch of churches before we settled on the presbyterian church we're at now. Good luck.

I would recommend the NIV - New International Version. It's a lot easier to read than a lot of the older translations, and I think you would really get a lot out of it.
Before you begin reading, pray that God will give you the guidance and knowledge to take in the things you are reading and apply them.
Hope this helps!

One is his explanation to his better halves and yet another is combating to the death for Islam. I learn religions, and different philosophies, and the two books are sturdy representations of cultures' perspectives of themselves, their international, God and the kinfolk between those. Too many people attempt to place greater into them than is in there. this is the place the hassle starts. in case you desire to be attentive to approximately God, close the books and go searching you. he's everywhere outdoors the books. somewhat little of him is in there.
