This is an English speaking country. We don't care where you are from, English is our language. Learn it or go back to wherever you came from!

Yes, if I went to france I would not expect them to conform to me, I would either have to learn the language or not talk, I do not think the US should have to conform to others who want to immigrate here.

I love in the united states, I speak the national language here, I do not understand why people think I should have to learn another countries language to speak to people in the United States....Just like the National Anthem being sung is spanish...it is just redicilious!

I agree with your saying and i like it! As to the person commenting on France we don't go there and expect them to learn English, and we aren't living there illegally!

wait... think about the rich history of the states and canada... where did it come from? all good things take time.

although many might secretly agree with what you say, it's lack of diplomacy in a saying like that that has given the world an impression of the states as a country of complete arrogance.

one minute they are proud of being known as a "melting pot" and the next complaining of going through the process of becoming a "melting pot".

you can't have it all.

all the people who come to the states, a country that is based on a proud history of freedom (offering freedom "to all who enter here"), started out as immigrants at some point (except first nations, ofcourse). it takes a generation for all aspects of the new country to be incorporated. but it DOES happen.

my parents were immigrants from europe. my mum learned her english through us when we went to school and learned. it's how it goes... and what makes this process so incredibly beautiful.

immigrants may not speak english immediately but the culture and depth that they bring to us is invaluable and what makes us so incredible.

imagine if you went to another country with a totally foreign language. it would be a lonely thing if you could not speak the language immediately. imagine the comfort you would feel if you found another person who spoke your mother tongue!

open your mind just a bit and try to understand that all good things take time. everyone learns to live the ways of the country in which they live... sometimes it just doesn't happen right away and we don't know everyone's story either.

I happen to agree but maybe not for those reasons. We do speak English here (of a sort), and I wonder what happened to the requirement that immigrants learn English before applying for citizenship or immigrant status. And the extra cost for our school systems to teach English as a Second Language is astronomical. What would be wrong with incorporating that with regular English classes? Or regular foreign-language classes? Seems that would be "killing two birds with one stone". I guess that's not allowed anymore.

most people come to t he US for a better life and most don't have a chance to learn the laungage before they come here. English is one of the hardest languages to learn and therefore should not be forced on other races. if americans were forced to leave this country then we would expect what ever country we moved to to give us a chance to learn the laungage so we should extend the favor. By the way, for an immigrant to become a US citizen they have to live here for 5 years and learn the laungage along with the amendments and key points in history. so they should be allowed here not knowing the language and given the 5 years here to learn it.

I feel that it makes you sound um...what's the word...lazy? Racist? Ignorant? The immigration/language dispute is really just another ugly branch of the long-standing white imperialist attitude of America. It's government-endorsed racism. The simple fact of the matter is that more and more, you need to be bilingual in order to be successful. We are a world superpower, a cultural melting pot, and you're insane if you don't see that we're becoming increasingly connected to the rest of the world through the internet and other media. If you're clinging to the old ways of speaking only one language, you're getting left behind.

Why are we too stupid to learn another language or just too lazy. Other countries teach english as a second language and we only just started teaching our kids Spanish in school. Why not enhance our stance by learning other languages and cultures?

Most foreigners I know do speak english. But if they are around others who speak what they speak, they speak their language. we do have freedom of speach, we should be able to speak another language if we are out in public. However, if you are a business owner, i feel if customers are around, you should speak only in english.

well well... the funny thing is when Americans go abroad- ok, let's say a lot of Americans, because not 100% of them are like this- DO expect other people to conform to them and speak English!! I have witnessed some pretty rude behaviour from American tourists who are shocked and ticked off to find out that people in non-English speaking countries DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH! everything from rude language, to yelling at people- as if they were committing some major fault for not speaking the language that they, the visitors, speak? so pleeeease- spare me your preachy nonesense!
