The New Orleans Hilton is in a safe area. It's located near the Riverwalk and the cruise ships. If that is too pricey there is also a Holiday Inn and a Hampton Inn on the same street just a little farther away from shopping. Some friends and I stayed in the Hampton Inn on Convention St and it was nice but a long walk to the Quarters.
There is also the new Riverfront Hotel. If you want to stay closer to the french quarter the Marriott on Canal, and the Astor Crowne Plaza are nice. It really depends on how much you want to spend. Just try and stay on the main streets and you'll be safe.
