My grocery store has an olive bar. I always see these 1.5"-2" mozzarella balls in oil. What do people use them for? What types of dishes do people make with them?

What I do with them is to warm them and then place them in the bottom of a Pasta bowl and place my Pasta dish I've made over them, nice little cheesey surprise. I also cut them in half and add it to salads

Marinated mozzarella balls are tasty to eat without any further preparation. However, they can also be tossed with a combination of fresh tomato chunks, olives, green onion, and/or fresh basil.

The larger, unmarinated balls of fresh mozzarella are really good when drained, sliced into 1/2 inch rounds, and placed in overlapping, alternating layers with thickly sliced tomatoes. Drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Season with a little salt and pepper to taste. Then take FRESH basil, torn or cut in a chiffonade (roll the leaves together, then cut in thin strips), and distribute over the tomato/mozzarella slices.

You can also make a yummy sandwich of fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar on a sweet french roll.

They are used in Italian antipasto salad, normally including marinated artichoke hearts, cherry tomatoes, salami and olive oil. Below is a similar recipe that uses other cheeses.

I've always wondered that myself...the only thing that I can think of is eating them sliced up with tomatoes...my art history professor always talks about the foods he eats when he brings his study abroad classes over there and he said something about fresh mozzarella and tomatoes.

They can be served as antipasta (just like they are or spread on bruscetta), but the most common use these days is in salads. A popular salad is tomato, onion, basil and mozarella drizzled with balsamic vinegar dressing.

boccacini balls are what they're called i think. you can use them in antipasto, salads, or you can boil them together in a lot of salt water to make your own mozzarella cheese. you can top pizza with them, you can do whatever you want with them, its like mozarella just in ball shapes. lol

I just use them on my antipasto platter. If you want to give them a little zip just drizzle them with a little olive oil and sprinkle a few red pepper flakes on them.
