Digital or film? Roughly 35 mm size (including dSLR's) or medium format, such as Hasselblad?

This is impossible to answer without any qualifications.

Canon makes the best digital SLR. Any of their EOS cameras are terrific. Expect to pay $1200 to 1500 for one.

Either the Nikon D2xs or the new Canon Mrk 3... you'll be paying much more like $5-6000 for them... before you buy any lenses.

Since you asked...

If price were no object, I would purchase a Hasselblad H3D-39.
With a low price of $32000 USD, it's perfect for any budget.

It is a wonderful 39MP camera that takes stunning pictures. If you buy it and would like me to "break it in" for you, please email me... I would be more than happy to shoulder that burden.
