Carbamazepine (Merk # 1783) is used as an analgesic and anticonvulsant. It is practically insoluble in water but freely soluble in Ethyl Alcohol, Acetone and Propylene Glycol. Since it is an amide it is only weakly basic and reacts with strong acids to protonate on the carboxylic oxygen rather than the nitrogen. The charged protonated form is more soluble.
If you want to solublize it to take it by mouth then you might try taking it with orange, lemon, lime or grapefruit juice instead of water as these juices are weakly acidic.

I am not sure I understand your question.

I take carbamazepine (Tegretol) and it is very soluble. The minute I put it on my tongue, it starts to break down. I worry that I can't swallow fast enough.

Drink ALOT of water when you take this medication. That will improve the solubilitiy.
