Cronides is correct. Consumer Reports is not out dated. SOME models are discontinued. Personally if you want a lot of zoom consider camera I bought .The Sony CyberShot DSC-H2 still being sold. Has 6 megapixels, 12X optical zoom, makes excellent 8X10s when enlarged. Has image stabilizer. Very good on batteries. Comes with battery charger.Only 1 sec delay between shots, can be bought for $300-; or consider camera I bought my daughter the Fugifilm FinePix S5200. Makes excellent 8X10s when enlarged, 5 megapixels, 10X optical zoom, excellent on rechargeable batteries. Rated a best buy in Consumer Reports. I paid $248 in Dec. Still being sold. These are super zoom cameras with excellent lens quality. Also consider the Canon PowerShot S3 IS. It's 6 megapixels, 12X optical zoom. This info is SINCE their report of Nov'06.

Canon is the best. What is your price range? Do you want a point and shoot or dSLR?
More info would help to make a good suggestion.
Otherwise, go with the Canon SD1000. Nice new addition to the Canon line-up. The older models are great (SD600, 630. 800IS, and 900).
Consumer reports is outdated. You can't get most of those cameras in stores ( you can find some of them on-line). It's the nature of electronics. By the time they are reviewed, they are obsolete.

According to the most recent Consumer Report:
the top 3 compact cameras:
Olympus Stylus 800
Canon PowerShot A630
Kodak EasyShare C875
top 3 sub-compact:
Canon PowerShot SD430
Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital ELPH
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1
top 3 advanced compact:
Fujifilm FinePix E900
Kodak EasyShare P880
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1
top 3 super zooms:
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2
Fujifilm FinePix S5200
Canon PowerShot S3 IS
I have the Canon PowerShot 3SIS and have been very happy with it. In general I'm fond of the Canon cameras and camcorders because they use standard SD memory cards that are much cheaper than some models that require you to buy their own memory (which they jack the price up on).
