Something is wrong.

A dentist will want to go to extraordinary lengths to preserve a tooth. Such infections can be cured. You will be getter off WITH the, infection-less, tooth.

Is this a recurring infection? He may have to try several therapies to cure the infection.

Clearly whatever treatment you last got is not working. Go back to your dentinst and have him relieve your pain. Have him explain what his plans are.

get a second oppinion. You can brush with a bit of peroxide to reduce infection. You can mix peroxide with baking soda and a bit of toothpaste for tast . i have done this when i could not afford a dentist for an infected broken tooth and it worked. This will also whiten your teeth if you do this regularly. Here is something else to consider... infection in your teeth can lead to serious heart problems so if this dentist won't pull it, go to someone else who will.I would insist on having it pulled.

Wisdom teeth serve no useful purpose and are almost always painful and cause problems. Most dentists will go ahead and pull them shortly after they come in if they are causing problems. I am surprised your dentist is reluctant to pull it.

He probably wants you to have a root canal, which is much more expensive. I know you are in great deal of pain. I'd seek a second opinion and get some antibiotics!!!
