Well, I can tell you that Geothermal heating is becoming more popular in the midwest. Your heatpump pumps water out through piping in your yard, where the water is cool or heated (depending on the season) by ambient ground temps and ground water, and then it comes back into your home and is used to heat or coll the place. Saves a ton of money! So if you are asking down to that low of a level, geothermal heating is used in many, many places around the country.

Nearly everywhere. Ground source heat pumps can be installed anywhere. They pump water (or sometimes freon) through pipes in the ground which heats the water or freon. In the summer, the process is reveresed and water or freon is cooled. Depending on fuel costs, these can be quite cost effective.
