Is there verses to back this up? I believe Jesus Christ was God but did Jesus actually say He WAS God - or just God's son? I'm confused.

Yes. Compare Exodus 3:13-14 (where God speaks to Moses and identifies Himself as the "I AM") with John 8:58 (where Jesus identifies Himself as the "I AM.") He was nearly stoned for blasphemy for saying this, so the Jews clearly understood He was calling Himself God.

The Apostle Thomas acknowledged Jesus taught He is God at John 20:27-29:

27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”
28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Notice Jesus doesn't rebuke Thomas for calling Him God. That's pretty convincing, isn't it?

Jesus did not claim to be the Father God/YHWH.

John 10:36 do you say to me whom the Father dispatched into the world, 'You blaspheme because I said, I am God's Son?"

But the Bible does call Jesus Mighty God. Isaiah 9:6.

Revelation calls the Father Almighty God. Rev. 1:8.

It is very interesting to learn that the Bible uses different definitions for the same words. Like mountains, beast, of old, heaven and God, etc.

So every time we read these words, we need to get all the definitions and consider the context, pray, to come to the correct understanding.

Websters on line shows that besides the Creator, powerful ruler is also a definition for god. Satan is called the god of this system, but no one asks if he is 'the God.' 2Cor 4:4, Luke 4:6.

How can we explain the comment that the Father and I are one?

Jesus also asked that all his followers become ONE, just as he and the Father are ONE. Does that mean that millions will become God with them? No, it means that true Christians will be on the side of the truth and will be one in the sense of spiritual righteousness.

When Thomas said, 'My Lord and my God' he could have meant that Jesus is his ruler.

After reading anothers comment, I just want to say that when I read the Bible, I see the Father/AM God/YHWH as the Creator. He is also the Holy Spirit.

I see Jesus as God's Son, yet a mighty God.

2Corinthians 3:17 Now YHWH is the Spirit and where the spirit of YHWH is, there is freedom.

'He that sees the Son sees the Father.'.. So many claim Jesus is the Father here, but I believe it is talking about the fact that Jesus is the image of God in personality, as Jesus did the will of God always, in each situation.

Jesus also said, 'Before Abrahm came into existance, I AM'...to me this means I am alive.

Jesus Christ said He came from his father's place, which was not of this world. My personal father is also dead, and I could very well claim I came from him also.
The inflection that everyone puts on the meanings behind the way Jesus answered questions, deny a true answer to your question.
Believing that Jesus was a GOD must be a part of your true beliefs, and therefore, a part of you and your definitions of GOD.
I believe we ALL are a part of and come from GOD. He is part of us and we have a part of HIm inside of us, no matter what church you belong too.
If that was not true, then the miracle of your heart beating without your conscious control and effort every second, would not hold true. Who is beating your heart?
Where will you go when you die? To see your GOD. To experience what YOU believe will happen to you! Then, you will see that what I say is correct, and be glad I told you! ha!

Gospel according to St John
Chapter 14

7 If you know me, then you will also know my Father. 6 From now on you do know him and have seen him."
8
Philip said to him, "Master, show us the Father, 7 and that will be enough for us."
9
Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
10
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.
11
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves.

Also

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. John 8:58

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...All things were made by him...He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not...And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us John 1:1, 3, 10, 14

after the resurrection:

"And Thomas answered and said unto him [JESUS], My Lord and MY GOD."

Conclusion, my dear friends:

Jesus Christ is God, and to His name every knee shall bend.

And He will come in glory to judge the living and the dead. Repent from your sins and believe in the Gospel, then you shall have life in you.

God bless

Jesus is God. God has three forms God the father, God the son, and the Holy Spirit. So technically Jesus is God

Jesus never explicitly claimed to be God. He knew that if He did they would have killed Him immediately for blasphemy.

Instead, he insinuated it. He referred to himself as the "Son of Man" and Old Testament reference indicating his deity. He stated that He and the Father were one, and that he spoke directly with God and had communion with HIm. That he did Gods will and could forgive sin, as only God could.

He performed the miracles to validate that his power was from God so that ppl would believe him.

No one fully got the point though until after the ressurection.

yes

John 8:58"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"

I AM is the name that God told the ancient Israelites. It's not just bad grammer. Jesus was making His claim. Earlier in the chapter He was telling the Jews that "I am who I have been claiming to be" while it doesn't state those claims prior, I could assume that is what He was claiming.

John 8
58Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." 59So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

Impossible, we would not be able to delineate him out of the crowd if he did. If he existed he claimed to be an individual human and other men turned him into their god, thus winning their war on the individual...For now. Anytime an individual teaches human flourishing, a group bastardizes his message into their own. Consider what Hitler did with Nietzsche's messages. He tried to turn him into a god.

No, he claimed that he (and everyone else) were God's children.

History of the early church seems to indicate that Paul deified Jesus when he was starting Christianity.
