I mean in a rather mainstream, formal editorial. Not all the words English speakers use all over the world.

about 200,000 english words are in common use. websters 3rd new international dictionary lists 450,000 words and revised oxford english has 615,000 but that is only part of total. technical and scientific would add millions more. (this is as of 1990)

Accordingly to the Longman's Dictionary of Contemporary English, anything in English can be described by a total universe o f 2.000 words (actually it is what that dictionary does : since it is designed for foreigner people usage to English learning, its vocabulary is restrict to the essential)

Well, I am not sure if I am answering your question, but in usa people use approximately 200. Perhaps I am exaggerating.
They repeat the same words over and over, "yo", "tu" "what's up ?" "what's down ?" etc, etc

Alot. I don't really know how you would count the # of words being used. That would be quite a task
