He didn't tell them not to call him good. He asked them WHY they are calling him good and went on to say that only God is good. In fact, he was saying it is right that you call me good, only God is good, I am God.

Jesus didn't say not to call Him good. He asked a question. "Why do you call me good".. I proclaim that He is good according to that verse because He is God. That is the answer to the question Jesus asked the Rich Young Ruler and the answer to yours as well.... Jim

Jesus said there is no one good but the Father, because He is Holy. There is no sin in God the Father.
Even though Jesus is holy He says not to call Him good because He knew he was about to take upon the sins of the world so we could be saved.

actually He did NOT say he wasn't good
he said "when you call me good you are calling me God"
the person he was talking to threw around the word good in an overly commonplace manner
the rich young ruler thought Jesus was 'a good guy' in the same way he thought of himself as 'a good guy' He did not see any need in himself, thinking himself to keep the entire law nor did He understand a transendant goodness of God

Because Jesus is a humble man. He doesn't want to blow his own horn. He doesn't want people to get wrong idea of him, he wants everyone to know he's just a human like as all of his followers.
