There is no such thing as a best diet and there are no shortcuts. We are what we eat, but we are at least as much what we don't do. Calorie intakes in 1900 and 1950 were higher than they are now, we just don't use them up!

Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg.

Take a healthy amount of exercise 30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise per day 4-5 days a week. I hate to think what percentage of the UK population does that 2%? 5%?

I have seen hundreds of questions with this same pattern :- I am fat, tell me where on line I can get this super diet or herbal/dangerous/illegal drug that I hear will fix it for me in 10 minutes without the need for me to get off the couch!

No fixes pal , less in more out, its the only way. When I googled loose weight I got 57,500,000 hits. Fifty-seven and a half million!!!!!!

You could probably find a 100 different studies that claim different diets are the best. Here is my opinion on the matter. No diet is the best.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of the diets that are created today contain great information. Whether its Atkins recommending to cut out simple carbs, or the book You on a Diet recommending you to walk more, there are good health tips burried in those diets.

The problem however is that they are diets. They are short term, temporary solutions to a problem. You diet with an end goal in mind...lets say going to the beach this summer on a camping trip. So you diet hard for those 3 months leading up to it, lose a bunch of weight, and the minute you get home from your trip you go right back to your old diet habbits. This results in your weight flucuating up and down, which is extremely dangerous and hard on your heart and body.

The best diet, is just eating sensibly, treating yourself occasionally and exercising several times a week. That way you're not cutting out every single food you love, and you're not putting an end goal in mind. You're living a healthy lifestyle, and as a benefit you will lose the weight that any diet book would get you.

However I understand I have not answered your question. If I had to choose I would say The Abs Diet. It's essentially not a diet book, rather tips for eating smart and exercising properly. I would recommend you read that book if you're still wanting to try a diet.

Get a book called. "You On A Diet". If you have the motivation to do it on your own, this book is a great resource. Otherwise, try Weight Watchers. Do not go for those programs such as Nutri System or Jenny Craig. They expect you to purchase their foods. In the Nutri System commercial, one of the ladies even says that this is her second time doing the program. What does that tell you about their program? That it isn't permanent, and they do not teach you how to cook your own food, and what a portion actually is.
Other programs such as LA Weight Loss and Slim4Life, expect you to buy a bunch of supplements that you have no idea are safe, or if they even work. They also do not have appropriate medical staff on board to make sure that you are losing weight and that you are still healthy. Any program that touts a 12 pound weight loss in a week as great, stay away from.
Stay away from diets that are either no fat/low fat, low carb/no carb, or low protein. Your body needs all three of these nutrients in the approriate amounts for it to thrive. Atkins is a revolting diet. It is unhealthy, and deadly.
This is a lifestyle change anyway. You need to learn how to eat again, and how to move. Learn about portion sizes. There are many great web sites out there that can teach you about portion sizes. You also need to get rid of all the refined and processed stuff out of your diet. Go for foods that are as close to natural as possible.
Eat vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy, lean proteins, and whole grains. Eat several smalls meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism going, and don't forget to eat a healthy breakfast. Please don't say you don't have time. Your body needs to have a meal the first thing in the morning. If you skip breakfast, your metabolism will slow way down, then it will be impossible to lose weight.
In the end though, it does come down to one thing: calories in must be less than the calories you burn, so you must exercise. Try for at least 30 minutes a day. Invest in a heart rate monitor. Keep your heart rate at 65% of max for right now. You can increase the intensity, as you train. To get your target heart rate, take 220 - age. That number is your max heart rate. Now multiply that number by 65% or .65 That is where you want your heart to be for now. This is called the fat burning zone. To spark this, drink a Gatorade or Powerade before you exercise. The carbs in this will ignite this process.
Don't look at this as having to count calories. Look more at what an appropriate portion size looks like. When you go out to restaurants, the amount of food that you get is ridiculous. It is enough to feed at least two to three people!
So make sure that you are eating healthy, and that you are active. You have to move it to lose it. Also, drink plenty of water.
Good luck. You will do it.

Just look at the amounts you're eating. I was gaining weight for a while and realized that it's because I eat lots of snacks throughout the day. So try to cut down your meals to just breakfast and dinner and a small VERY VERY low calorie/fat snack. And after a while cut that out too. Sure enough your weight will lower and equalize out at a new level. Though, I'm not a doctor.

I am a fan of the Low GI diet although I do not follow this as a reglion, I am a believer of everything in moderation and cut back on the booze and you will notice a massive improvement.

Sensible eating and lots of exercise will help you archieve your goal, akins, water loss diets are all rubbish and you will end up sick and miserable.

Atkins is the worst as it doesn't work.
I think just healthy eating with exercise is the best way to maintain a healthy lifestyle and you can have the odd treat.

The best diet in the world eat in moderation, anything in moderation will not harm you or increase your weight. This advice was given to me by my Grandfather who's weight never varied and lived to be 82. Avery good age in the UK at the time.

If you mean a global diet, then the Mediterranean diet would be the healthiest: parsley, garlic, olive oil, seafood, little wine...

If you mean specific diet, then that depends on your condition, job you do, illness, etc.

If you want to eat healthy, then you have to follow certain simple rules on how and when to consume your food. This might be a good start:
