1) Joe Cortez - efficient doesn't break the fighters too quickly. He is unobtrusive. Almost invisible, but in charge.
2) Mills Lane - Excellent referee, was in charge at all times. Would rate number one, but he was a bit of a hot dog.
3) Richard Steele - Safety of the fighter is number one on his list. He has taken unfair criticism for it.
4) Randy Newman - Somewhat efficient.
5) Jay Nady - Some fights he is too involved penalizing too quickly, breaking fighters too soon not letting them work on the inside. Some fights he seems too fall "asleep" in there.
6) Mickey Vann - Ricky Hatton's "personal" referee. The Kostya Tszyu fight proved that. The worst in the business in letting the fighters from "home" work the elbows and head without taking points.

The absolute best referee ever was Arthur Mercante Sr. He commanded respect in the ring, he let fighters work on the inside, he took points only when warranted and absolutely necessary, he displayed good judgment in stopping fights at the appropriate time. He did all of these things without involving himself or bringing attention to himself when in the ring. The fighters are the show NOT the referee.

I used to like Mickey Vann because he trys not to get involved to much, but his handling of the Derry Matthews Vs John Simpson fight was woeful so he has dropped down my list. Joe Cortez is a cracking ref and so was Mills Lane, they both stay out of the way but dont really miss much if there is anything that they should be noticing. Jay Nady is my least favourite ref at the minute his refereeing in the Marquez fight the other night and the Mayweather fight against Baldomir both left a lot to be desired. Steele seems to be a pretty stern ref, i think he gets a bit too involved sometimes but i would say he is firm but fair.

They all suck. I really have it in for Steele and Cortez. I've never seen so much bias from a ref than Cortez showed in the Whittaker-Chavez fight. Pernell had to take things into his own fists and finally drill Chavez in the crotch to get Julio to stop with the low blows to the hips and thigh. And if you watch carefully, Cortez, when breaking a clinch, would shove Whittaker backwards but only rest his hand on Chavez's chest. That was BS of the highest degree. Hopkins was right about Cortez.

Richard Steel is going to burn in hell for stopping the Taylor-Chavez fight. "Do you want to continue?" Meldrick Taylor nods "yes", Steel looks at the 10 second warning light and waves off the fight. Looked like pro wrestling.

I've never seen a ref that could completely control what happens in a ring. You've got the let tangled fighters TRY to fight their way out.

Blogbaba rates Mills Lane higher than Joe Cortez, but otherwise, Brent pretty much nailed it. I agree with Arthur Mercante Sr. being the best, but I was suprised nobody mentioned Tony Perez, he should have been in the mix somewhere. Great question.

I think Mills Lane is a cool referee because of his catchy instructions and how strict he is to make sure the fight is clean and fair.
