It is called 'celebratory gunfire' during my tour in Iraq we kept close track of Iraqi sports so we could warn our troops about the gunfire if the local soccer team won.

Over there it is hard to tell the difference between the local team winning a game and world war three.

Celebration would be my first answer, but celebrating what leaves me confused. Celebrating the fact that they have guns that actually fire bullets, or that they have a surplus of bullets and it doesn't really matter if they waste a few, I don't know. It seems a bit moronic to me, but Middle Eastern people are not known to be (in general), well lets say, "enlightened." The real question is, if they didn't have guns do you think they would throw rocks into the air instead?

But seriously, I think this can be viewed as a celebration of power. They think guns are viewed as powerful, because they have the power to take life (which IS the ultimate power in their eyes). Also, they think this displays military superiority. What they don't understand is that while they point their weapons vertically, we point out weapons horizontally and on target (a clear tactical advantage).

I've noticed this activity through out the middle east. I wonder if they understand it doesn't endear you to possible new employers.
