Kittens aren't the only ones who do this -- adult cats do too. In addition to digging, if the plant is big enough they think it's the place to "go". Or, they dig out the dirt and "go" in the pile of dirt on the floor.

You need something that still looks good and doesn't stink up the house, that is an easy to do and permanent solution. Small rocks and gravel won't work because the cat can still dig.

There are smooth, polished rocks available, cheap. They are shades of brown, rust, black and gray and come in mesh bags. Some places sell them by the pound. Put these rocks on the surface of the plant. Kitty can stand on it but can't dig.

I'd also spray the surface of the rocks with a little bit (not enough to hurt the plant) of Simple Solution. This will take away some of the "earthy" smell that attracts the cat.

Give kitty some new toys so she has something else to do. Give her more attention, too. If you still have problems with her, such as knocking over smaller plants, she may need to be put in a room while you're away or asleep. She won't mind, really, and she'll just take a nap.

I tried using coffee grounds, but that just made the house smell like coffee grounds!! I finally put large rocks around the top of the dirt and that was the only way my Siamese stopped digging at my house plants. He also pulled all of my wandering jew stems down and I ended up taking the ever so tempting hanging plant out of my house and into the trash!

I've had to deal a similar problem.

You could cover the top of your dirt with marbles or smooth pebbles. Or you could somehow put a barrier between your kitten and your plants, such as a cage. Or put the plants in a room that the kitten is forbidden to go into.

Good luck.

Rubbing moistened black pepper onto the leaves and placing stones on top of the dirt will dissuade Kitty from tasting or digging in the plant. This habit can prove dangerous. While not a complete list, the following plants and their relatives can cause everything from mild gastric distress to death: aloe vera, amaryllis, members of the lily family, asparagus fern, azalea, corn plant, dieffenbachia, dumb cane, many ivies, philodendron and the holiday favorites, holly and mistletoe.

Get some stones or pebbles and canopy the plant airborne dirt and dust with those. the better ones paintings greater effective, because of the fact the kitten won't have the skill to scratch in a pile of stones. you additionally can conceal your plant airborne dirt and dust with aluminum foil. it is, regrettably, a organic habit for cats--they scratch, they pee, and then they scratch greater to cover it up. make certain she's making use of her muddle field and not your flora, because of the fact repeated urination on potted flora will kill them especially in the present day. you will no longer have the skill to maintain her from scratching--as I suggested, this habit is instinctual and organic for cats. merely supply different issues for her to scratch on--a number of those cardboard scratch pads case in point--sprinkle some catnip on them and he or she'll take to them quickly. Or provide her a scratching submit, or a sisal scratcher--or in line with possibility a chew of wood. She desires to scratch. She does not ought to do it interior the flora--yet a kitten does not understand that the only reason you're correcting her with the water is because of the fact she's interior the incorrect place. conceal the airborne dirt and dust with some thing--and supply her some thing ELSE to scratch on.

I have used a spray bottle filled with water. This is something they don't like and gets them in the habit of staying away from your plants. I also used it as they got older to teach them not to jump up on counters. They respect that!

Tightley cover the pot with plastic wrap. After a while, you can take off the plastic and the kitten will be out of the habit.

Keep them way out of her reach, that's about the only thing. I gave up on having live plants indoors. I hope someone has a better idea for you!
