Very dry air might be good for some people due to reperatory issues, but most people feel more comforatable and are less prone to skin problems in the 40% - 65% range.
It's also not good for pets or paint to be that dry. Also - computers and HIGH humidity are a bad mix, but too low and you risk a much higher rate of static eletricity. Shoot for 45%-55% and you should be ok.

Humidity is necessary but a humidifier may not be. According to the CDC a room humidifier can be a source of infections especially in clinical situations.

It depends on what you want to use a humidifier for. I used to use one in my bedroom because I would have nosebleeds from dry mucous membranes in my nose. Then I found out that I was allergic to mold, and I quit using it because mold grows in humid conditions. In a lot of cases, it can help with breathing problems. My son had pneumonia and the doctor told him to use a humidifier in his bedroom and it helped. Also if you have musical instruments made of wood, dryness can be damaging to them, but so can too much humidity, so you need to be careful.

They are not really necessary unless you feel the environment is TOO dry, for example you have a very dry throat. A humidifier just brings more moisture into the air, and so would help a dry throat.

If the air is dry, yes. There is one family I know who suffered badly from dry, hacking coughs- until they started using one. Once there was a little more moisture in the air, the coughing went away.
