even though you don't want to spend a lot of money, stay away from sporting goods stores, Kmart, Walmart, etc.
go to your local bike shop and look around, ask questions, GET FITTED, doesn't matter whether you choose a MTB, road, or cruiser
check out KHS, Trek, Specialized, and Giant... all are good brand names and have many bike styles to choose from in many price ranges... plan on spending at least 500 to 600 bucks on whatever you choose so you have a quality bike.

if you are willing to spend about 400-500 dollars you can get either a Giant FCR3 or a Trek 7.2FX. They are hybrid/fitness bikes which are used on the road but are very quick. They are a mixture of mountain bikes and road bikes... the speed of a road bike but the comfort of a mountain bike with a pretty light frame.

a mongoose is good, but those are mainly for off road, and they're good for guys. Schwins are good too, for girls mostly, though. I have one, they're great.
