It already is....In my city being a bilingual social worker gets you about $800 more a month than a monolingual one.

What a terrible question after the way we've bent over backwards to help people who only speak Spanish! What we need to do is make it IMPOSSIBLE to function here if you don't speak English. Cut out the special privileges for illegals, because most people here legally speak English. Not that I have a problem with being bilingual, but the nerve of some people, telling US which language we must learn. Did the aftermath of the marches last year not teach you anything? These unreasonable demands being made by illegals and their supporters are making them more unwelcome by more and more people as time goes by.

When I lived over in Deutchland, I learned rudimentary language skills before I went over. Within a few short months I could understand the language more than I could speak it well. However, I could speak it well enough to be understood with little or no problems.

When someone goes to another country, it is up to them to learn the language of that land to be understood and not vice-versa.

In the US, we speak a variation of the traditional English language.
In Mexico and South America, they speak a variation of the traditional Spanish language.

In any case, it is up to the person immigrating to learn the laws and language of the land they will be occupying.

You should be asking how we can make it more expensive for people who have been in the US for months and still have not even a basic understanding of how to speak US English.

Why would you have an agenda to prolifigate Spanish? 200 languages are spoken in the US, do you want to have to learn those, too?

We already have a language Americans from all places can speak to eachother in. It is called 'English'.

Gotta love the mindset, eh people? I don't expect anyone to speak English to me when traveling throughout South America. Granted, my fluency in Spanish is not as great as those who've been speaking it their whole life, but it isn't bad and I can hold my own in a conversation.

By an ironic twist of fate, some immigrants who come into the US feel that the entire US should be required to speak Spanish, so they don't have to put in the effort to learn a new language. Un-fricken-believeable and extremely pathetic.

You must be joking or simply trying to push peoples buttons. Either way the offical numbers for language in the US per the CIA World Fact Book are as follows:

https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/us.html

Languages:
Definition Field Listing
English 82.1%, Spanish 10.7%, other Indo-European 3.8%, Asian and Pacific island 2.7%, other 0.7% (2000 census)
note: Hawaiian is an official language in the state of Hawaii

English is the defacto language of the US, I suggest all naturalized citizens learn it.

That is a silly idea. We have our language and it is English (I know they now say it is not the official language but it was when I was in school). I don't think it is bad to learn another language but I think if you are coming here to live from some other country it should be mandatory to learn English. Spanish for US citizens should be voluntary not mandatory.

Why don't all Americans and people who live here instead of speaking english or spanish learn the NATIVE AMERICAN language?? People are bothered by illegal immigration, and are RUDE about it. I know if I would have been an american Indian back in the day, I would have felt horrible to see ships and ships of ILLEGALS coming in from Europe!!! Why are americans judging and criminalizing immigrants as if they never did it themselves?? I don't get it. Ever hear about KARMA...what goes around comes around??
