Find a club with people with similar interests. For example, if you like to Bike or run, find a biking or running club. If you like to play Tennis, go to the local YMCA or gym. You get the idea.
I had the same problem when I graduated college and moved to Atlantic City. I was pretty bored and lonely until I went to a local convention for an interest of mine. I met some local people there who have been friends ever since (15 years!). I made a lot of friends through them and so on.

Chicago is a great city...there is so much to do there! Even if you don't live in the city, it doesn't mean there aren't plenty of reasons to visit! My advice, research something you are interested in...many cities have guilds, clubs, associations, ect. that pertain to certain forms of business, so people in an industry can talk about what they love in a non work enviornment. It's a great way to meet people. If your into art or museums, go to some lectures or workshops...go see a favorite band play somewhere. Going to these kinds of things on your own is great way to network and meet new people! Its also an awesome confidence builder. Maybe even ask people around work about places someone just out of college would enjoy. If your still uncomfortable, bring a friend up from school and go discover new places together....then maybe you'll find something interesting you'll like goin to on your own.

Find a friend at work you can hang out with, hopefully one that can introduce you to other single/young people.
Join a club of some sort -
Online dating
Season tickets to Cubs or White Sox, you will get to know everyone sitting around you. Should be the same people every game.
Join a church
Join a gym
Trying going out and sitting at "the" bar and striking up a conversation with the person sitting next to you. Keep going back to the same place every X days - sooner or later your a regular and everyone knows your name.

Try and o some things after work with your co workers,
go to the club/bar, or just get out there. take one of your parents and go see a movie or just walk around shops.
This gets you out in the citie, so people can see you, and through time you'll get more and more friends.
Good Luck

You need to join some clubs--join some groups that sound interesting to you and get involved--or join some service-related groups--that help other people--whenever you are helping others--there is less time to feel sorry for yourself--you will also meet nice people that way...Volunteer or get a new job somewhere--part-time--Good Luck:)

Maybe you can start by going out with your co-workers. Have them introduce you to their friends. Go to bars or clubs if you enjoy that kind of scene. You just got to be at places were there are a lot of people you can meet.

When you aren't working you could try finding friends at:
Library
coffee shop
bookstores
Places you like to go is a good place to start to find
people who have similar interests.

Well you aren't trying hard enough. lets just say your walking around in the city and you see someone walking. "duh" that person could become a good friend. Just be friendly with everybody around you. Or go to a club to hang out...good luck and best wishes
