So many ? not in millions as others say.

If you look at hinduism with specs of semitic religions it may look different.

Hindus Do believe in ONE GOD whom they call Brahmm or Turiya or Aum...and they do not make any idol of that God

However, hinduism, unlike other religions believe that the Supreme Consciousness which is spread in Cosmos and beyond...manifests as this universe and is the cause of our life

This One God, manifests as a Trinity of Creator, preserver and destroyer - brahmaa, vishnu, rudra.

Since hinduism allows its followers to worship god in any form some worship god as Father, some as Mother some as Friend even some as Beloved

But all hindus know they are worshipping that One God, in different name or form

If there is one FAITH (for many it is RELIGION) that does not have any specific WRITTEN code etc, to be STRICTLY followed, then that is OUR RELIGION ...called by many as HINDUISM. We are all Hindus, irrespective of whether we go to temples and worship or not; irrespective of whether we follow any rituals or not; irrespective of whether we believe or not. That is why our Late President Dr. Radhakrishnan rightly defined HINDUISM AS A WAY OF LIFE.

The GODS in the common man's idea have been "created" based on various TENETS of human life, wherein at each situation of human development/ evolution the society's percept for correct and disciplined living is propounded through such GODLINESS. Sometimes such "creative" presentations are on the basis of local achievers who could overcome problems and situations that the ordinary people could never do.

However, the essential feature of HINDU faith is that GOD MANIFESTS IN VARIOUS FORMS OF LIFE AND THE CYCLES OF BIRTH AND DEATH (IN BOTH ANIMATE AND INANIMATE THINGS) CREATE CATACLYSMIC EFFECTS IN THE WORLDLY EXISTENCE OF ALL THINGS THROUGH GODLINESS. THE ONE THING THAT IS UNIVERSALLY PREVALENT IS THE SOUL/ ATMAN, WHICH EVER PERVADES SPACE-TIME PHENOMENA.

Oops! You got your question wrong.
In Hinduism there are many FORMS of the same God.
Hindus are very creative persons and there were so many Avatars who had taken birth. We show respect to each and every form of God . God is not narrow mindedness , but broadening our vision to accommodate each form.
In any corporate boardroom , the photos of all earlier MDs will be displayed . This means that we are taking inspiration from their shown path.
Hindus are also not dogmatic. They say that this God is for this purpose , it is your choice whom you prefer. This is like we refer to so many books to clear our thoughts , so many paths are shown , to reach the same goal.
Our Great Swami Vivekananda said that in Hinduism only "there is one form of god or the other to suit one's taste and liking".
So Hinduism has become richer and complete with so many visions and images for loving and revering through so many occassions and rituals of satisfying our tremendous spiritual hunger for realising the ultimate in us.

Hidus have a tri-head god, much like the Christian belief in the trinity.
Some view Hinduism as Trinitarian because Brahman is simultaneously visualized as a triad -- one God with three persons:
-Brahma the Creator who is continuing to create new realities
-Vishnu, (Krishna) the Preserver, who preserves these new creations. Whenever dharma (eternal order, righteousness, religion, law and duty) is threatened, Vishnu travels from heaven to earth in one of ten incarnations.
-Shiva, the Destroyer, is at times compassionate, ****** and destructive.

in hinduism u can worship god in any format(roopa). so all family / tradition has their own gods.
certain gods have basic duties, like brahma - creation ,vishnu - manage, shive - distroy, laxmi - wealth , sarswati - vidya (education) etc;
also therez gods for special purpose (like mahisha mardhini - just to kill mahishasura)
some become god after a specific incident - ganesha .
and if u attain a high level in spirituality u r also considered as god.
in hinduism 33 crore gods are belived to be present.

hinduism does not have many gods but propounds that there is only one god.it is not a monolithic religion and there is complete freedom to an individual to hold any view.there are therefore many sects within Hinduism and everyone is free to call god by any name and conceptualise him in any manner leading to the seemingly multiple gods and different ways to worship him.

Polytheism exists to account for many observable phenomenon in the world, rain, sun, wind, ..etc... Also, polytheism produces gods of human emotions and activites such as love, anger, war...etc..

Its perfectly normal and natural if you think about it. We are always trying to make sense of the world in which we live.

Good Luck!

That is because we follow cults. We show as if we worship God, and do not care to know who the supreme personality is.

We are obedient people to our parents and follow blindly what our parents tell us about culture and god. We do not apply common sense in this most serious matter.

We then call superstitions to be the matter of faith. It is really shocking that we do not draw inspiration with our spiritual wealth of knowledge.

We read scriptures like we read Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. At least in learning PCM we take the help of a teacher, but in matters of spiritual enlightenment, we prefer to apply our own minds. Knowing very well that He is incomprehensible by the intellect and a saint only can explain Him to us.

Dear friend,
One must read atleast some basic books about Hinduism. In the internet too there are a lot of web sites about Hinduism. One can read with open mind about any religion. It is most welcome that everybdy knows the fundamentals of all religions so that they may not hate one another. No religion preaches hatred towards another religion perhaps.

Now let us come to your question ''why Hinduism has so many Gods?'',
Hinduism is acclaimed as the Greatest religion .
Hinduism is infact not a religion in the broader sense; it teaches how to live in harmony with nature and fellow beings. It is a system of living.Never in hindu scriptures you find things teaching hatred or any negative things.it always preaches gratitude, love and devotion.
Hindus saw that their life depended on so many things.they needed Sun mostly for their activities, for rains, for the agriculture and for good health.they expressed gratitude worshipping sun as god and sang hymns.
similarly the Rain they wanted. They called rain god ''varun'' and praised him. They saw the imprtance of fire and named fire god as Agni or jaata veda and sang hymns.similarly for forests they called ''vana devatas''.air they called vaayu deva.
in every aspect of life ,even in death they saw divinity and called god of death mrutyu devata ,yama raj.
so you can observe how keenly they observed the imprtance of each and every thing of life, however trivial it is and expressed gratitude singing hymns and calling them as gods.all these gods finally unite in ONE.they called it AADI SAKTI.(Initial Energy).
There were Rishis who were experts in introspection and were able to see what is the meaning of life.they saw the ultimate truth and tried to express in many ways ,each in his own way.as all roads lead to Rome, all these theories lead to that Brahman, the Ultimate Reality ,many call GOD.

so, the presence of s many gods in hinduism is a measure of their intelligence, their moral responsibility to be grateful to them by praising them, please read good Books on Hnduism and you will be astonished about the intelligence of our rishis.
I suggest Yogavaashistam written by Valmiki. In this great book you can see beautiful arguments, counter arguments, proofs for the proposed things so expertly written.
You can see this question also there and answer also.It is 32000 slokas in sanskrit. So it can't be explained here fully.
I hope my answer is useful to you.
