He is currently 27.6 pounds which is healthy however you can see 5 of his vertebrates and his hip bones. From what I have been told you are only suppose to see 3 of the vertebrates.

He has a healthy diet and has just been to the vet he is healthy just skinny. The vet wasn't much help on suggestions.

Any ideas? Thanks much have a terrific day!!!!

Thanks to everyone's great answers I am going to try a couple things out and then decide the best answers.

They are just so hard to get meat on. My main goal is just to have him be healthy.

I just want to thank everyone before I make
choice.

Adolescent male whippets are sons of guns to put weight on - You just may have to wait a year or so till he's an adult male. Other options: defiantly high calorie food (look at fat content)but I've had little luck with that they just eat less of it!
If you just want to cover those bones & you don't care what with - running will put muscle mass over that spine. Check with www.asfa.org for clubs who may be having lure coursing proctices......

I've had a few afghans who always tended to be a couple of pounds underweight. They were really healthy, very active and that's just the way they were.

If he's a little too skinny, it's not anything to worry about - he's much healthier than if he was a couple of pounds overweight. Some sighthounds just stay this way. Given your dog's age, he might still put on a couple of pounds but don't try to force him.

This may sound gross, but raw chicken backs, 2 or 3 a day, plus a dog food for pets with high metabolism. You can get them from the butcher cheap, and they're supposed to add to the weight. Or, you can try cottage cheese, bread, baby food meat, and crackers or plain rice. This is a bland diet which can also add to the weight. Good luck!

i hear this breed has close to no fat cells below the skin from years of being bred in desert like conditions so he may never get much fatter, the only thing he can gain is muscle mass and he may not have much over his spine, most of the grey hound type dogs show alot of bone and showing only 3 vertebrae may be a show dog qualification, so he doesn't have show dog substance he's an idividual and each animal will differ, if the vat gave him a clean bill of health then don't worry but do blanket/ jacket him in cool to cold weather, because they do not have body fat like other breeds

I had a Whippet for 15+ yr's & I swear I was alway's trying to get a couple more puond's on her :)
They are a harder breed to keep weight on they more they take in they more they put out (running playing ect..)
If you've already got him on a good food you can try adding different thing's too add calories..
Their are Yeast's that are good for weight gain.
Malt (like for milkshakes) is really good for weight..
You could also try NutraCal you can get that most anywhere..
Just make sure you don't ovr do it, They are not ment to carry a lot of weight..
Good Luck..

Well when we want to bulk up our dogs. When they where puppies we would tie bricks to them and let them run around . as they get used to it and our able to drag it around with ease add more weight this will get them stronger and put weight on them but good muscular weight. By the time my dog was full grown he weighed 200 pds in muscle and he coud pull for car tires like nothing. Also feed him steak or meat every once in a while. Its good for him. This may sound alittle cruel but if done right its a good way to make your dog put on weight.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. If he's young, he will fill out as he gets a little older. Whipets are supposed to be lean and narrow. If he's eating well and active, leave him be.

i have also a whippet who was very thin so what i did was to put some olive oil to her dry food.
plus i stopped giving her treats when we were going out for our walks cuz i noticed that it would cut her appetite in half.
