The king's advisors were jealous of Daniel, and so tricked the king into proclaiming himself a deity for a day. Everyone had to worship him, and no other god. Daniel chose to worship God instead, as the advisors knew he would, and they confronted the king (Daniel's friend) with the facts. The king was forced to have Daniel thrown into the lion's den, where he stayed overnight. Miraculously, they didn't bother him at all. The next morning, the king called out for Daniel, and was relieved to learn that he was alive. He then had the advisors thrown in, and they were killed before they hit the ground.

Darius's sorcerors were jealous of Daniel's success at solving the kings dreams, so they tricked the king into making a law that no one could pray to anyone but him. They knew that Daniel always prayed to God every day, and they knew that this law wouldn't stop him,. The punishment for breaking this law was to be thrown to the lions. So, when the time came, they arrested him and tossed him in. He survived because God shut the mouths of the lions. Daniel was faithful to God, and God rescued Him when he was punished for it.
