Buddhism was founded by Siddharta Gautama, who was dismayed at conditions he saw. He rejected 2 key principles of Hinduism, the caste system and the Vedas as being authoritative.

There are 2-3 major branches of Buddhism, depending on how you figure it. the wikipedia article at a superficial reading appears to be reasonably accurate (I am not endorsing it, but I did not see any major errors).
