Some people are mean, so they hurt others feelings for fun.

Some people don't understand that what they say or do can hurt someones feelings, so they do it by accident.

Some people think it's more important to tell the truth at all costs ("Yes, that dress makes you look fat."), so they hurt people's feeling's out of pure honesty.

Some people believe that it is a way to motivate someone to do something they should do, so they may hurt others feelings out of love for that person.

There's probably other reasons too.

Some do. Some do it because it's necessary to drive a point home. Some like to bring others down to make themselves look better. Some just enjoy hurting people.

I don't go out of my way to hurt someone's feelings unless that person is doing the same... I treat it as an act of vengeance

A question I have often asked, in different ways.

A couple examples...

I had a supervisor with whom I was quite close. We could socialize outside of work and have some fairly personal discussions; sharing things with one another. And then, at work, if he found himself with an "audience," he often seemed driven to engage in "put-downs" and "zingers." I could never understand why he felt the need to do that.

And, of course, you have Yahoo Answers. Unmoderated forums seem to attract miscreants like dung lures flies.

People come here who seem to have made a career out of slinging insults from the safety of their computer. I swear, they have something seriously missing in their life, but I can't say what it is...

Not necessarily. There are situations that fall into that bully mentality, where someone goes after someone else to boost their self-esteem, but I think it's more about our own ignorance or apathy about how our actions, directly and indirectly, affect others.
