I don't think it will, certainly not in the short term.
Contrary to what the majority of people in England think it's Scotland that subsidises England. Outside ths southeast of England Scotland is the richest part of the UK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_the_United_Kingdom but the media don't like to acknowledge that and give a biases viewpoint instead.
There is strong support and opposition within Scotland when it comes to the matter of independence. If you talk to the Nationalists they'll tell you a majority want independence, if you talk to the Unionists they'll tell you a majority don't. I guess the true number is probably more or less evenly split.
Certainly the numbers damending independence have been growing in recent years which I assume is down to the fact that Scotland performs better than the rest of the UK when it comes to matters it is now able to control for itself, matters such as health and education.
Oil is the contentious issue and with 1.5 trillion dollars worth of it lying under the sea off the Scottish coast no split is going to be easy as both sides will want to retain control of the oil. Without it the rest of the UK immediately goes bankrupt and Scotland becomes the Saudia Arabia of Europe.
Scotland is one of the only countries in the world to be governed from beyond it's own borders and I do think the Scottish Parliament should have more control over affairs within Scotland.
As to whether there will be a split, maybe when the oil runs out and England no longer has a need for Scotland, until then England can't afford to let Scotland go.

I do and unlike the majority of answers here I don't see it as an anti English or Anti Scottish thing. The Union has had it's day but times change and now it is time for the different parts of the UK to renegotiate their relationships. Scotland has always been a nation and Scots are waking up to the fact. Though an SNP (but no longer a member) voter I do think the SNP are qualified to lead Scotland to independence. At the least they should be given the chance to run the exec. Labour have made a mess of it. too many people seem to think that independence will happen right away. It won't. Negotiations have to be made. The scottish electorate have to be asked. It could take 8 or 10 years.
It makes me laugh though that our southern answerers always bring up the Scots MP issue. Where were their complaints when there were no Tory MPs ibn Scotland but we (the Scots) had to put up with a tory Gov? The Scots didn't vote for Blair. He has an English constituency. As for Brown, If Scotland gets independence he won't be able to be the UK PM - that is if the Kirkaldy voters put him back in as we are as scunnered with him as the rest of you.

I think Alec Salmond and his cohorts are pushing for that. Hopefully the Scots or at least people, of all nationalities who live in Scotland, with the vote will turn out on the day in May and vote against this, historically less than 50% of the electorate vote at the moment. So if you want to maintain the Union VOTE because APATHY will almost certainly let the Nats in by default and they are not fit for purpose. The SNP is a One Man Party.

I hope they will eventually take full control for there own Legislation and taxation also Wales and Ireland leaving us with an English Parliament. It wont happen soon as the Labour Party with a large number of Scottish M Ps will resist to the end. We must remain the United Kingdom Of Great Britain.

I hope it does and soon. England will be better off without having to subsidise them with our tax money plus we would have English MP's voting on English matters. There wont be a Blair, Brown, Browne or Alexander in sight, the totalitarians.
