I use rollers, and place them diagonally all over my hair. My curls are prefect. First, I used a relaxer, then I wet set my hair with setting lotion and then roll it up. Or you can buy the curling iron for spiral curls. Then you take small sections of hair and wrap it around the barrel. Do this all over your head. One thing the curls do not last long with a curling iron. They will start to droop.

If you are spriral curling your hair with a curling iron, I would suggest taking a 1" section of the hair and wrapping it around the curling iron. First, take the hair and using the opposite hand, gather it into the curling iron from root to end. (That way you can apply a little heat to all of your hair, not just the ends and decrease frizzies.) Then, secure the curling iron on the end of the desired curling section and wind your way up. *Tighter winding will give you a tight curl, loose winding will give more of a wavy look. Wait for about 15 seconds and then release the curling iron. REPEAT UNTIL ENTIRE HEAD IS COMPLETED, style accordingly and get ready to be complimented. =)
Hope this helps...

the smaller rods are easier to get volume out of an entire head. You could, while your hair is wet, take pieces about one inch thick and twist until tight. Pull them back until they dry and then you will have the longer spirals and less volume (unless you run your fingers through them)
