The question is this.

Can God just look at someone and say, "ok, you're forgiven"?

Or does there have to be some sort of atonement, sacrifice, a token?

If someone stepped on God's shoes could he just say "don't worry about it"

Or would the person have to give him 5 bucks and do a song and dance?

The atonement God requires is prayer and sacrifice. The Scripture says, "The effectual FERVENT PRAYER of a righteous man availeth much." The sacrifice comes in the Scripture where we're told to "Mortify (kill, stop doing) =ye the deeds of the flesh....." Free-willed compliance with these (along with water baptism, sanctification, and being filled with the Holy Ghost) directives is what God requires.

This is down to your beliefs really. But let me put it this way if someone does something really really bad and then asks for your forgiveness, and lets say you forgave them and then they went and did it again and again and again... would you still continue to forgive them?
The way i think it works is you can be forgiven for virtually any sin as long as you:
a) ask for forgiveness
b) really mean it
c) and never do it again
Do that and i cant imagine any reason why you wouldnt be forgiven.

God is all powerful and It can do whatever It wants. I think you have to intend injury to atone? of course, i don't even believe in that, lol, so....avoid stepping on It's shoes

God looks at Jesus' sacrifice for you and then after you have accepted His Son and repented, He will tell you that you are forgiven.

All you would have to do is ask to be forgiven. The "song and dance" as you put it was done in your place when Jesus died on the cross. :) Good news huh?

Jesus is the sacrifice. Jesus is the only way....God refers people to His son. Jesus said no one goes to the Father except through Him.

Jesus will forgive you when you ask him to. If you were to step on his foot on a accident then he would say that is alright but if it is was on purpose then you would have to say sorry before he would forgive you.

there must be a sacrifice in order for God to forgive someone of their sins - sin must be paid with death
