My cat tries this constantly. This may seem mean, but its not. Play cat hockey. When walking through the door, if the cat comes up and tries to sneak through, gently tap it with your foot. If light tapping does not work, hold your foot still, firmly. Your cat might take a few weeks (maybe months) to get the idea. Another thing that will help (keep your house smellin nice :3) Is get your cat spayed/neutered.

First off, is he neutered? Neutered cats are much less likely to roam.
He's already gotten a taste of the outdoors and obviously likes it so don't keep him in completely, just buy a harness and take him for walks or tie him like a dog. I've seen many cats that love this, they're just happy to get outside and don't care that they can't roam because they've been "fixed". My own cat included. We used to bring her out and walk her for a few minutes everyday. She would just sniff around, enjoy the breeze and roll in some dirt, then she was ready to come in. She's never bolted for the door.
Now we live in a third floor apartment and we don't walk her anymore but she goes out on the balcony if we're out there with her. She loves it, for a few minutes, then will ask to come inside. My male cat hates the outdoors. The patio door can be wide open and he'll sit on the inside of it, and will never cross the threshold, lol.
Edit: 1 year is not too old to leash train. He won't like it in the beginning but hang in there, he'll get the point that if he wants out it will be while tied.

Firstly, is he neutered, if he's not, have him done, this could be the reason he escapes, he's off courting.
Can you give him some food or a treat to distract him from trying to escape?
Keep a water squirt bottle near the door and if he looks like he's going to try to get out, give him a squirt. Many cats hate this and will run back inside. Another alternative if he doesn't freak out at the water, is to use a can with pennies inside it and shake it loudly.

Pick the cat up when the door is going to be opening. Put the cat in another room if there is going to be a lot of in and out traffic through the door. Taking it to the vet to get spayed or neutered may help.

The only way punishing a cat (spraying etc.) is going to work is if you catch him in the act. If you punish him when he comes home, he will think that is what he is being punished for.
Try putting a sign on your door warning people to open the door slowly and make sure the cat doesn't get out.
If your cat isn't fixed, getting it fixed would probably help a great deal.

Your cat is close to it's instinct, that being an outside animal. You have to make him want to be indoors rather than outside, but why try and change him since he comes back healthy every time and doesn't get into trouble, thereby negating why people keep animals indoors? Leave a window open, he is,. after all, a cat.

I have two cats who do not go outdoor without me...
They also listen when I tell them to come in...
Maybe it's because they are "helped", they tend to get more homely then...
What you can do is to place a "insect screen" in a window so they can enjoy the fresh air but they can't get out. And for your own nights rest, install at cat door somewhere so at least you don't have to get up when he wants to get back in.

He should have been neutered at 4 months but yes that will help a lot. Other than that you just have to watch him very closely to make sure he doesn't get out. But if you don't get him fixed, you are going to have problems..He WILL mark his territory...Not pretty and doesn't smell good either.

My cat who is less than 2 yrs old. Does the same thing. First thing i would do is buy him a collar and a tag so, if he ever does get lost, someone will be able to bring him back to you. second thing, is hold him in your arms and open the door, but just keep holding him, it should get him a sign that you don't want him to go outside.
