It varies. A specialty wine shop and (ironically) small convenience stores will try to average 40%; large stores and supermarkets 30-35%; aggressive stores like Trader Joe's and Beverages and More! 25% and (where legal) warehouse stores as little as 15%.

Well, if you notice that you can purchase a bottle of wine from a liquor store for about half of what restauarnts charge, i would suggest about 2 fold. As you mentioned, it certainly depends on so many things. What kind of contract does the store have with the distributor/vineyard? Is it a popular wine for the region? season? they also need to mark it up enouhg to put it on "sale". They may mark it up 30-45%, so they can reduce it for a "sale" price. There will always be a markup, and I would imaging the highest would be on the vineyards that have a large commercial presence, a well-known name and that sell most frequently.

I don't know but my mom used to put marks on the wine bottle so she could tell if we drank some. We just drank it watered it down HA! Don't be mad @ me, the question just reminded me of something from a long time ago and made me laugh. Hope you got a giggle too.
