It takes quite a while, usually a few weeks before you can return to doing vigorous physical activity. Some patients have been known to recover fully in 1-2 weeks, but those are pretty atypical.

If your appendix did not burst and you are in good health, it should take about a day or two to recover from the surgery and be discharged to home. After that you can expect to be out of work or school for about 1-2 weeks. You will not be able to drive if you are on any pain medicine stronger than plain tylenol or ibuprofen.

If your appendix ruptured, you will typically be in the hospital from 5-14 days for intravenous antibiotics and nutrional support (total parenteral nutrition). You may be discharged home with a special indwelling IV and have a visiting nurse to administer antibiotics. Expect a longer return to a normal schedule, probably 2-3 weeks at least.
