The nutro in the cans and in the pouch packets have been recalled. I still continue to feed my puppy the Nutro Ultra Houlistic for puppies as it is dry and he is in fine health.
But you could try Eagle Gold
Sew Good Luck

In answering late - it really depends on what you feed, how much you feed, and where you buy. I have 2, 80 pound dogs - the younger gets around 2lbs a day whereas the older dog gets about 1 1/2 lbs of food a day - soon to be taken down to 1 1/4 lbs for winter. the health benefits far outweigh the cost for me. other benefits are my dogs don't stink, skin/fur or breath. teeth are always clean, coat soft and shiny, no big sticky/mushy poop to deal with. I probably spend about $100 a month on food for my dogs. They actually don't eat $100 worth of food a month. I fill my freezer on a monthly basis so they will never run out of food. Although I get most of my meat between $ .50 and .99 per pound I do buy a variety of not-so-common things to feed them that may cost a little more than a $1 a pound.

I spent 4 hours on the net last night going over ingredients in dog foods trying to find one that met all the criteria that I wanted and that was sold in my area. I was unable to find one that met all my needs that I could purchase here. The nutro holistic puppy food had a fairly high meat content, some filler and vegatable content with grains. An interesting website I found to go over all these ingredients in your dog food was:
www.dogfoodanalysis.com
Good luck with your search.
I feed Eukanuba natural lamb and rice formula
I also would like to mention that both the vets i've used recommend Science Diet and come to find out it is extremely high in carbohydrates and grains... Ground corn being the very first ingredient listed. Followed by Chicken by-product meal, soybean meal, Animal fat and dried beet pulp. Not a very healthy line up if you ask me. So what your vet recommends isn't always the best. They get free samples handed out to their cliniques by the company to promote sales. Do a little research and find something that your comfortable with!

I use to feed my dogs Nutro too, but I switched over to CANIDAE (not because of the recall) and they seem to love it. They go more regularly, their fur seems to be softer, and they have better looking teeth too. It also looks a lot more apetizing then the nutro.

hmm. like someone has already said, look at the first ingredient.. it shouldnt be rice or something along those lines, thats just a cheaper way to make the food. So look for Meat first. Purina has not been recalled and Purina pro plan is probaly one of the best but costs more money. I use purina one.

Look for soemthing that has a meat product as the first ingredient. Dogs are carnivores, don't feed them something with corn as the first ingredient.

i think that neutro is a good brand, and I never heard anything about a recall, but if you have to switch, go for ones that have meat as the main ingredient. if the first ingredient is liek corn, that is bad for them, and it is just a filler, and give no nutritional value.. goes in, all goes out... hope that helps... if you have any more questions about dog diet, feel free to e-mail me at cheekee_monkee_81893@yahoo.com thanks

look for something that has an equal balance of nutrients
in it. not to much protien as this can lead to schiztcephrennia
in most dogs. you also need to get a brand that is equal
to there age (1yr to us is 7 to them)
meannig dont give puppy food to mature dog as puppy food has to much caloric intake for a mature or less active dog and can make it obese talk to any Vet s office to find out for sure.
